5 films to watch this Halloween

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
"Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of 3 people with the culprit being the legendary apparition, the Headless Horseman."
Tim Burton's film based on the 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow' by Washington Irving; starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.
Visually striking with a gothic aesthetic, it's a film I watch every year on Halloween.

The Witch (2015)
"A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession."
Simple yet unnerving, with a tense atmosphere that slowly builds; it's original, effective and worthwhile viewing.

Let The Right One In (2008)
"Oskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl."
A Swedish vampire film that's stark, nuanced and original. It manages to be dark, sad, tender and poetic.

Ravenous (1999)
"In a remote military outpost in the 19th Century, Captain John Boyd and his regiment embark on a rescue mission which takes a dark turn when they are ambushed by a sadistic cannibal."
Not all monsters are of supernatural origin. A criminally underrated film starring Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle.

The Wicker Man (1973)
"A police sergeant is sent to a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl whom the townsfolk claim never existed. Stranger still are the rites that take place there."
For older fare go with this British cult classic and ignore its later remake. With some in Christian circles decrying the 'paganism' of Halloween ... this viewing holds a delicious humor.
